Carrie Lee Moates Merrill
Carrie Lee Moates Merrill, 95, of Jamaica, New York passed on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at her residence.
Carrie was born January 17, 1927, in Cross Hill, South Carolina to the late Will and Sarah Cooper Moates. She was the widow of Roosevelt Merrill. Carrie moved to New York at a young age with her Aunt Carrie to better herself and her family. She went to night school to receive her education and got herself a job. She started working for Standard Motors in Long Island City, New York and retired after 42 years. She was a member of the A.M.E. Church in Jamaica, New York.
Carrie leaves to cherish her loving memories two brothers, Robert (Veronica) Moates of Jamaica, New York, and Melvin (Tonya) Moates of Woodruff, South Carolina; two sisters, Sue Pearl Bryant of Simpsonville, South Carolina and Marion Waters of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Willie Lee Moates, Harry Moates, Joe Moates, Clyde Moates, Arthur Moates and Larry Moates; four sisters, Carry Moates, Mary Frances Smith, Isabell Moates and Millie Cannon.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary Chapel, 257 North Main Street, Woodruff, South Carolina by Dr. Bobby Rookard and Pastor Derrick Scurry. The Committal, Benediction and Interment will follow at New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Kelly Road, Woodruff, South Carolina.
Serving as casket bearers Jadlin Waters, Gabe Glass, Rodriques Meadors, A.J. McDaniel, Travis Jeter and Terrance Moates.
The family would like to give a special Thank You to Carrie Lee’s caretaker, Mrs. Veronica Moates.
