“Coach” Gordon Godfrey
WOODRUFF- “Coach” Gordon Godfrey of Woodruff, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, November 28, 2025. What he would want you to know more than anything else is how you can join him one day. The answer is found in John 14:6, a verse he often quoted, where Jesus said, " I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
He was born April 2, 1943, in Woodruff to the late R.B. Godfrey and Hazel Landrum Godfrey. He was a graduate of Woodruff High School Class of 1961 and Furman University Class of 1966. He retired from Spartanburg County School District 4 in 1999 where he served as a teacher and coach. Coach Godfrey was instrumental in starting the Woodruff Area Soup Kitchen and served on the Board of Directors from its beginning in 2006 to present. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and also served in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving is his wife, Dianne Bagwell Godfrey of the home; one daughter, Dana Godfrey of Woodruff; one son, Rev. Daniel Godfrey (Heidi) Godfrey of Spartanburg; one sister, Mary Alice Sczechowicz of Oxford, Georgia; grandchildren, Matthew Puckett and Michael Puckett, Chloe Godfrey and Troy Godfrey. He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Nye Templeton.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Woodruff officiated by Rev. Daniel Godfrey. Interment will follow at Bellview Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
Serving as pallbearers, Matthew Puckett, Michael Puckett, Barry Brown, Gordon Brown, Matthew Brown, Charles Hembree, Jerry Landrum and Michael Smith.
