Dale Henry Obituary

Henry (Greer, South Carolina / Rutland, Vermont)

Dale Arnold Henry

Dale Arnold Henry, 83, of Greer, South Carolina died on April 17, 2024, at home with his family following a long illness. He was born on June 21, 1940, in Springfield, Vermont, the son of Arnold and Frances (McCutcheon) Henry. As a boy, Dale was active in DeMolay and played basketball. Always a jokester, Dale, along with two friends, climbed high up on the roof and painted “1958”, the year of his graduation, where it still remains today on the historic building, formerly Chester High School. He served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division and was stationed at Fort Bragg from 1958 until being honorably discharged in 1961. He and Linda Nelson married August 20, 1966, at Chester Congregational Church and they enjoyed a marriage of almost 58 years that welcomed four children. Dale loved cars and sold them for more than 40 years, working as a Sales Manager in new and used cars, including dealerships for Pontiac, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC, stating, “You can deal with Dale!”. He was an expert marksman and enjoyed collecting firearms, hunting deer and turkey, and trout fishing. Active in the community, Dale attended Grace Congregational Church, and he was a Past President of the Mendon Fish & Game Club and Past President of the Taconic Range. Late in life, he finally had the opportunity to bag a moose.

He survived a stroke in 2011 that left him in a wheelchair, but Dale never let anything break his spirit, retaining his quick wit and sense of humor. He and Linda left their beloved home at Cold River in North Clarendon, Vermont, moving to South Carolina in 2012 to be with their son and his family. In his golden years, Dale enjoyed trips to the South Carolina coast, the North Carolina mountains, which reminded him of Vermont, and eating plenty of good meals. Peach pie, BBQ, and pancakes with real Vermont maple syrup were some of his favorites.

Dale was predeceased by his parents, a special aunt, Harriet Briggs, his brother-in-law, Al Vorhis, his stepmother, Phylis Savage, and close friends, Clarence “Bud” Cox, and Ray Cristelli. Dale is survived by four children: Kristen Hixon of Rutland, Vermont and her children Brandon, Amber (and her husband Bryan Leitch and children Bryan and Mary), Leslie and Torri; Jennifer Atkinson and her husband Lee of Herndon, Virginia and their children Sarah (and her husband Omar Ismail and daughter, Ayah), Alex, Kurtis, and Audrey; Alison Houston and her husband Jamie of Midlothian, Virginia and their children Tanner and Rachel; Dr. Lucian “Luke” Henry and his wife Tecora of Greer, South Carolina and their children Anna and Benjamin Dale Henry, named in his honor. He is fondly remembered by his sister, Roberta Vorhis of Jefferson, Maine, brother, John Henry, three stepbrothers, and cousins Dennis, Wayne and Bob McCutcheon, Gary Johnson, and their families and the rest of the McCutcheon clan, and many friends.

A private funeral service will be held at Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary in Woodruff, South Carolina with the family receiving visitors for a celebration of his life at their home. A memorial will be held this summer in Rutland, Vermont with Christian burial at Cheney Hill Cemetery.
