Ethel M. Chumley
WOODRUFF- Ethel Murphy Chumley, 99, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Spartanburg Medical Center, Mary Black Campus.
She was born May 30, 1921 to the late William M. and Corrie Walker Murphy. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodruff where she was the oldest living member. In 1940, she was one of the first telephone operators in Woodruff for the South Carolina Continental Telephone Company and retired from Enro Shirt Company. She participated in line dance classes and exercise classes for several years and well into her 90s.
She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Thomas H. (Tom) Chumley and two sons, Gary A. Chumley and James T. (Jim) Chumley and a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Rogers Chumley. She is also predeceased by two sisters and five brothers.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Dayna Fowler Chumley (Gary, deceased) of Woodruff; two granddaughters, Christina C. Thompson (Gregg) of Woodruff and Melissa C. Workman (Michael) of Woodruff and a grandson, James T. (Tommy) Chumley Jr. of Cayce, S.C. Also surviving are five great grandchildren, Sarah A. Workman, Savannah T. Uldrick (Will), Seth E. Workman, and Matthew G. Thompson all of Woodruff and Trace Chumley of Cayce, S.C.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 31, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Woodruff by Rev. Andrew Shull. Interment will follow at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens in Woodruff.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Woodruff, 801 Cross Anchor Road, Woodruff, S.C. 29388 for funding of the WHS Theology Class. This class is taught by local ministers, and materials are funded by the church.
The family is at their respective homes due to consideration of COVID 19.
Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic it is requested that masks and social distancing be practiced during the visitation and funeral service.
