Joan Ethel Duncan McMakin,91, of 611 Circle Road, Greer passed away Friday, May 1, 2026, at her home.

  She was born December 9, 1934, in Greenville, S.C. to the late Carl Duncan and Ethel Smith Duncan. 

  Joan was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Larry Alton McMakin; four brothers, Alvin, Ansel, James and Donald; three sisters, Elizabeth, Marceil and Gladys.

  Surviving are her children, Steve (Mary) McMakin, Mark (Penny) McMakin, Carla Coates and Pam Smith; sister, Lillie D. Hayes; grandchildren, Rusty (Claire) McMakin, Robbie (Jenny) McMakin, Heather (Will) Jones, Shea Starcher, Ethan Coates, Delaney Coates, Bethany Coates, Josh Smith and Michael Smith; great-grandchildren, Theron Jones, Oliver Jones and Finley Lowry.

  A private family graveside service will be held Friday, May 8, 2026, at Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery, 705 Anderson Ridge Road, Greer officiated by Rev. Tyler Estes, Chaplain Donald Miller and Mr. Tommy Duncan.

  The family will receive friends at the home of Steve and Mary McMakin, 291 Ford Road, Greer following the service.

  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

  We wish to thank family, friends, church and Heartland Hospice that walked with Mama on her year long health journey.  We love and appreciate all of you!
