WOODRUFF- Joe Lawrence Welborn, 93, of the Switzer Community went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Woodland Place Assisted Living, Spartanburg, SC.

  He was born in Garnett, Kansas, May 17, 1928, to the late Thomas Jessie and Dora Bristow Welborn and was the husband of the late Ollie McGee Welborn for 73 years.

His military service was with the US Army Air Forces from 1946 to 1949.

 Mr. Welborn retired from Crown Zellerbach after 34 years of service and retired from Snyder Electric Company after 18 years of service.

 Switzer First Baptist Church was his home church.  Survivors include his sister- in- law, Hendell Huffstickler, and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a daughter, Joy Lynn Welborn, and all of his 10 siblings.

  Mr. Welborn was affectionately known as “Papa” to Roger and Nancy Snyder and their children: Ginna (Drew) Chappell and their children, Lilah and Amelia; LeeAnn (Marc) Toney and their children, Allie and Jacob; and Sara Beth (Daniel) McGregor.  He was also “Papa” to Susan and Mike Cromer and their children: Laura (Brian) Hollis and their children Emily and Braden; and Kyle (Jennifer) Cromer and their children, Lincoln and Lena.

  Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary Chapel by Rev. George McDowell.  Interment will follow at Switzer First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.

  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Switzer First Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1634 Old Switzer Road, Moore, S.C. 29369.
