Peggy W. Gilliland

WOODRUFF- Peggy Workman Gilliland, 92, died March 7, 2024, after a long life serving the Lord.

  She was born in Woodruff, September 19, 1931, to the late Samuel Jesse “S.J.” Workman and Ruth Stephens Workman and was the widow of Dr. Oliver Earl Gilliland Jr.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodruff where she was a longtime member of the WMU, taught Sunday School for many years and lead many Bible studies and she was a Deacon. She established and led a Grief Support Group for bereaved families.  Mrs. Gilliland received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Blue Mountain College and attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  She received her Pastoral Education Certificate in hospital chaplaincy from Spartanburg General Hospital (now Spartanburg Medical Center) where she served as a Chaplain.  Mrs. Gilliland along with her late husband, served over 22 years in Indonesia with the International Mission Board.

  Surviving among her family who loved her so much is one daughter, Sondra Biggerstaff (Stanley) of Spartanburg; three sons, Oliver “Gil” Gilliland III (Jana) of Mansfield, Georgia, Mark Gilliland of Pensacola, Florida, and Greg Gilliland (Melody) of Greer; 6 grandchildren, Travis Gilliland (Gazali), Lindy Peterson, Tyler Gilliland (Nicole), Rev. Byan Biggerstaff (Madison), Danielle Biggerstaff and Dakota Biggerstaff; 9 great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a brother, Sam Workman.

  Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Woodruff by Rev. Andrew Shull and her grandson, Rev. Byan Biggerstaff.  A private interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery.

  Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service.

  Serving as pallbearers, Gil Gilliland, Mark Gilliland, Greg Gilliland, Travis Gilliland, Tyler Gilliland, Rev. Byan Biggerstaff, Dakota Biggerstaff and Stanley Biggerstaff.

  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering C/O First Baptist Church of Woodruff, 801 Cross Anchor Road, Woodruff, S.C. 29388 or the International Missions Board, 3806 Monument Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23230-3932.

  The family is at their respective homes.
